This should make the tests more robust at the expense of allowing
tests to be sloppier by not requiring them to cleanup after themselves.
(It will legitamitely help when running two test suites simultaneously
or if another process is already using one of the predefined ports.)

It also cleans up the code a little by removing some ifdef/endifs for
python prior to 2.1 and for unsupported Berkeley DB <= 3.2.

Let the field spec be either a string or a non-string sequence (suggested by Martin Blais with use cases).
Improve the error message in the case of a SyntaxError (caused by a duplicate field name).

This code was broken if save() returned a negative number since i contained
a boolean value and then we compared i < 0 which should never be true.
