It also cleans up the code a little by removing some ifdef/endifs for
python prior to 2.1 and for unsupported Berkeley DB <= 3.2.

Let the field spec be either a string or a non-string sequence (suggested by Martin Blais with use cases).
Improve the error message in the case of a SyntaxError (caused by a duplicate field name).

Also expand a few other methods' docs, which had more info in the deprecated string module docs.

Also use the safe unlink in test_support instead of rolling our own here.
