native_pgd_clear() uses native_set_pgd(), so native_set_pgd() must avoid setting the _PAGE_NX bit on an otherwise pgd_none() entry: usually that just generated a warning on exit, but sometimes more mysterious and damaging failures (our production machines could not complete booting). The original fix to this just avoided adding _PAGE_NX to an empty entry; but eventually more problems surfaced with kexec, and EFI mapping expected to be a problem too. So now instead change native_set_pgd() to update shadow only if _PAGE_USER: A few places (kernel/machine_kexec_64.c, platform/efi/efi_64.c for sure) use set_pgd() to set up a temporary internal virtual address space, with physical pages remapped at what Kaiser regards as userspace addresses: Kaiser then assumes a shadow pgd follows, which it will try to corrupt. This appears to be responsible for the recent kexec and kdump failures; though it's unclear how those did not manifest as a problem before. Ah, the shadow pgd will only be assumed to "follow" if the requested pgd is on an even-numbered page: so I suppose it was going wrong 50% of the time all along. What we need is a flag to set_pgd(), to tell it we're dealing with userspace. Er, isn't that what the pgd's _PAGE_USER bit is saying? Add a test for that. But we cannot do the same for pgd_clear() (which may be called to clear corrupted entries - set aside the question of "corrupt in which pgd?" until later), so there just rely on pgd_clear() not being called in the problematic cases - with a WARN_ON_ONCE() which should fire half the time if it is. But this is getting too big for an inline function: move it into arch/x86/mm/kaiser.c (which then demands a boot/compressed mod); and de-void and de-space native_get_shadow/normal_pgd() while here. We have been working on an efficient but effective fix for this problem and found that not mapping the kernel space when running in user mode is the solution to this problem [4] (the corresponding paper [5] will be presented at ESSoS17). With this RFC patch we allow anybody to configure their kernel with the flag CONFIG_KAISER to add our defense mechanism. If there are any questions we would love to answer them. Currently, we unconditionally make page table dirty in touch_pmd(). It may result in false-positive can_follow_write_pmd(). We may avoid the situation, if we would only make the page table entry dirty if caller asks for write access -- FOLL_WRITE. The patch also changes touch_pud() in the same way. An independent security researcher, Mohamed Ghannam, has reported this vulnerability to Beyond Security's SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure program. The xfrm_dump_policy_done function expects xfrm_dump_policy to have been called at least once or it will crash. This can be triggered if a dump fails because the target socket's receive buffer is full. This patch fixes it by using the cb->start mechanism to ensure that the initialisation is always done regardless of the buffer situation. BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1729256 xfs_attr3_root_inactive() walks the attr fork tree to invalidate the associated blocks. xfs_attr3_node_inactive() recursively descends from internal blocks to leaf blocks, caching block address values along the way to revisit parent blocks, locate the next entry and descend down that branch of the tree. The code that attempts to reread the parent block is unsafe because it assumes that the local xfs_da_node_entry pointer remains valid after an xfs_trans_brelse() and re-read of the parent buffer. Under heavy memory pressure, it is possible that the buffer has been reclaimed and reallocated by the time the parent block is reread. This means that 'btree' can point to an invalid memory address, lead to a random/garbage value for child_fsb and cause the subsequent read of the attr fork to go off the rails and return a NULL buffer for an attr fork offset that is most likely not allocated. Note that this problem can be manufactured by setting XFS_ATTR_BTREE_REF to 0 to prevent LRU caching of attr buffers, creating a file with a multi-level attr fork and removing it to trigger inactivation. To address this problem, reinit the node/btree pointers to the parent buffer after it has been re-read. This ensures btree points to a valid record and allows the walk to proceed. BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1729637 In commit 242d3a49 ("ipv6: reorder ip6_route_dev_notifier after ipv6_dev_notf") I assumed NETDEV_REGISTER and NETDEV_UNREGISTER are paired, unfortunately, as reported by jeffy, netdev_wait_allrefs() could rebroadcast NETDEV_UNREGISTER event until all refs are gone. We have to add an additional check to avoid this corner case. For netdev_wait_allrefs() dev->reg_state is NETREG_UNREGISTERED, for dev_change_net_namespace(), dev->reg_state is NETREG_REGISTERED. So check for dev->reg_state != NETREG_UNREGISTERED. BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1730852 VMWare ESXi emulates an mptsas HBA, but exposes all drives as direct-attached SAS drives. This it not how the driver originally envisioned things; SAS drives were supposed to be connected via an expander, and only SATA drives would be direct attached. As such, any hotplug event for direct-attach SAS drives was silently ignored, and the guest failed to detect new drives from within a VMWare ESXi environment. BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1727331 POWER8 has one virtual timebase (VTB) register per subcore, not one per CPU thread. The HV KVM code currently treats VTB as a per-thread register, which can lead to spurious soft lockup messages from guests which use the VTB as the time source for the soft lockup detector. (CPUs before POWER8 did not have the VTB register.) For HV KVM, this fixes the problem by making only the primary thread in each virtual core save and restore the VTB value. With this, the VTB state becomes part of the kvmppc_vcore structure. This also means that "piggybacking" of multiple virtual cores onto one subcore is not possible on POWER8, because then the virtual cores would share a single VTB register. PR KVM emulates a VTB register, which is per-vcpu because PR KVM has no notion of CPU threads or SMT. For PR KVM we move the VTB state into the kvmppc_vcpu_book3s struct. BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1728739 We were indexing the buckets array without verifying the index was within the [0,max_buckets) range. This could happen because a multistep rule does not have enough buckets and has CRUSH_ITEM_NONE for an intermediate result, which would feed in CRUSH_ITEM_NONE and make us crash.
